May 1 @ 9:30 AM - May 31 @ 12:30 PM

Each May, communities across the nation celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM)—a time to recognize the contributions of older adults and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their health and independence.
The 2026 Older Americans Month theme, Champion Your Health, emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as key foundations of healthy aging. The theme encourages older adults, caregivers, and communities to take an active role in managing health, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence and well‑being.

Throughout the month of May, organizations are encouraged to highlight evidence‑based approaches, self‑management strategies, caregiver support, and community partnerships that empower people to lead healthier lives at every age.

Older Michiganians Day is May 13, and Senior Action Week will be held May 11-15.

The Area Agencies on Aging Association, aging network partners, and advocates for seniors across the state are urging legislators to take action and ensure funding in the budget for critical supports and services in the following areas:

  • Rebalance State Medicaid Expenditures to Support Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)
  • Increase Access to Non-Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services
  • Modernize and Enhance Access to MI Choice
  • Support Unpaid Family and Informal Caregivers
