Mission: Supporting caregivers to understand their parenting role and youth trends, to equip caregivers with tools to help raise grandchildren and kinship relatives so they can better navigate their adjusted lifestyle.
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Committee (GRGC) is a collaboration of agencies working together to support a network of organizations, share resources, advocate for kinship/grandparents rights, communicate and plan events that will help grandparents and kinship caregivers.
Created in 2001, the GRGC network with local agencies to discuss important issues affecting kinship caregivers and grandparents raising their grandchildren in the metropolitan Detroit area. They meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month at the offices of Franklin Wright Settlements, Inc. (FWS). This committee is chaired by Juanita Bridgewater.
Under the sponsorship of DAAA, the committee collaborates to provide a series of annual educational, social and respite events throughout the year, such as the:
- Michigan Kinship Conference
- Mother's Day Luncheon
- Black History Month Celebration
- Backpack/Back to School Event
- Respite Retreat
- Holiday Gift Card Distribution
Bridging Generations is a support group of grandparents and kinship caregivers. Under the leadership of founder, Juanita Bridgewater, this group meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month. FWS also holds a monthly support group meeting. In these support groups of kinship caregivers, they come together to support each other and seek answers to problems, share information and resources that will help them to better understand their expanded family members through hope, prayer, communication and education. A special fellowship is formed through shared experiences by the participants who find strength and love in the group. Both groups meet at FWS located at 3360 Charlevoix in Detroit, MI 48207.
