Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare Updates for 2023

  • Shingles vaccine is now a covered benefit

  •  Enrollment Period effective date changes- Initial enrolment Period the effective date delays of the last the months have been eliminated. Now coverage will begin the following month after a beneficiary has enrolled. Page 17-8

  • General enrollment period January-March and coverage used to start on July 1 of that year, that has also been eliminated, coverage will start the first month after a beneficiary has enrolled. This is great news; it may help eliminate some penalties. Page 17-18

  • Part B Immunosuppressive RX coverage, this is a new Part B program under End Stage Reno Disease (ESRD) only covers immunosuppressive medications, no other Part B services. This is very important because at the end of 36 months following a kidney transplant beneficiary would no longer have Medicare, but has to take Immunosuppressive medications for life.  Enrollment starts October 1, 2022 and will be effective January 1, 2023. There is no late enrollment penalty, the premium cost is $97.10 per month, may be slightly higher for a person income over $97,000. Anyone how has had a successful kidney transplant and lost their Medicare can enroll in this plan. Page 52

  • Many Medicare Advantage plans have expanded dental services as part of the included services, in the past this has been an optional add on. They have also added, telehealth which is not a traditionally Medicare covered service, but has been covered by Original Medicare during the Public Health Emergency.

  • Medicare cost 2023: Part A is free if you have earned 40 credits, $506 a month for person with 30 or less credits and $278 a month for person with 30-39 credits. The deductible is $1600. Part B standard premium Is $164.90 decrease from this year. The annual deductible is $226, also a decrease from last year. Part D base beneficiary premium for late enrollment penalty calculation is $32.74 also a decrease from last year. The deductible for medications is $505, a slight increase from last year.

  • Medicare Parts A/B equitable relief: SSA phone system problems-If a person was eligible to sign up for Medicare between January 1 2022-December 30, 2022 and were unable to because of the problems with Social Security’s telephone system and haven’t signed up yet. They can sign up by December 30, 2022; this will not count towards a late enrollment penalty.Medicare and You Handbook 2023
